| Hello Lady Thrashers, Friends, and Family, It has been quite a year since I last wrote. After completing my sophomore year, this summer I traveled all over the place. I was selected as a member of the women's national inline hockey team in which we competed in the world championships located in London, Ontario. The Lady Thrashers' very own Laura Taylor came out to support us. Following this I went to Cornell for a week to help work a girls hockey camp. In early July I then left to study abroad in Baja, Mexico. It was probably the most incredible experience of my life to pack my bags and travel across the globe to such an unique and biologically significant part of this world. While I was there I was taught coastal ecology and sea turtle conservation, and specifically I studied hematological aspects of sea turtles. By testing their blood we have a better idea of any diseases or other related illnesses present in the local population. Prior to leaving for Mexico I received a letter inviting me to the national women's ice hockey camp in Lake Placid, NY, where the top 60 skaters were selected. The selection was predominantly taken from colleges, national teams, and of course the '02 Olympic team. Probably my most fond memory there was walking into my room in the Olympic Training Center and finding out Cammi Granato was one of my roommates! Overall, it was a great learning experience. Obviously I had a great summer. Then school began and before I knew it I completed my 5th semester as a Junior at Cornell University. Only spring semester separates me from becoming a senior! Time flies for sure. Hockey is going very well. We opened to Union College and beat them both games. We wrapped up the '04 season to Princeton and Yale, losing both games but battled very hard. On Dec. 27th we all arrived back on campus for the beginning of winter intersession. No school, all hockey. On Dec. 31 we left Cornell at 4 AM to fly to Minneapolis, MN. After we arrived we took a 4 hour bus ride to Bemidji State University. We arrived around 5 and had an hour and a half practice. We had a hearty supper and nonetheless went to bed before the new year rang in. Tonight we play at 7 and tomorrow we play at 2 both vs Bemidji. At the current moment, while there may be no academics, I am personally searching and applying for internships related to sea turtle conservation. Hopefully, I will work in a turtle rehabilitation hospital this summer somewhere along the coast. That's about it for now. I will keep you updated throughout the rest of our season. Thank you for your time, and Happy New Year! Jenny Munhofen GO BIG RED! |
